Chokolait Hot Choccy Review (Dark)
The other day; Hanza and I made a stop at Chokolait on the way into uni to try out their Hot choccys. The spot itself looks pretty cool and is pretty cozy and tucked away from everything despite its location. What drew Chokolait to our attention was the fact that these were Belgian hot choccys which is outside the usual for us. Alas we decided to give it a crack.
This may be a poor way of reviewing hot choccys and I will try not to make a habit of it - but I can almost split this experience into 2 despite only having the 1 drink. I got the Dark Hot Choccy whilst Hanza got the Milk Hot Choccy. Now having my partitioned the experience into 2; I turn your focus to the first experience which was the first couple sips. Immediately, it felt like I was swirling in choccy decadence. The extremely thick and rich texture as well as the dark choccy flavour were the first things that come to mind with the first sip. The following sips were more or less the same with the addition of me noticing how sweet it actually was. Now whilst I prefer a rich/creamy and thick texture, these first few sips felt like a bit too much. I never expected there could be too rich a hot choccy but this was an example of just that and Hanza agreed that hers was the same way. Despite this being a preference on our end, I felt as it took away from the milkiness of a hot choccy and it felt more like a liquid choccy beverage. (I should note that this isn't necessarily bad - I'm just making a distinction between this and a hot choccy) Additionally, up to a certain point, it felt like the sweetness was also quite overwhelming; not to say I found it too sweet for my liking, but the sweetness of it eventually overpowered the chocolatey flavour of it at a certain point. It was at this point, I decided to take a small break from it.
This leads me into the second partitioning of the experience. After letting the sweetness sit with me for a bit and chatting to Hanza about the political and economic state of the world; I ventured back into the choccy river. I have to say this was way different than the first experience. Now in actuality, the only objective differences where that it had cooled down and that I had the flavour, sweetness and texture sit with me a bit. But coming back to it felt like I was trying a relatively different hot choccy. Even though it had cooled down a little bit, it was still a good sipping temperature, definitely not one to down quickly which goes to show the heat it had to start with. The dark flavour was still ever so present and this time, the thickness had reduced immensely and the sweetness was no longer overpowering. This suddenly became a much better hot choccy. It was nice and flavoursome and much more enjoyable to sip on. That being said it still remained thicker than I would like and still lacked that milky feel and my above comments on how it feels like a choccy liquid still holds.
As such, I enjoyed this experience for what it was - but it doesn't really feel like a super positive hot choccy experience. Even though its location was super cozy and wavy, the drink itself feels more like a novelty drink with its presentation and especially given the prices - $11 for 1 hot choccy (albeit it was a large glass. But also listed as $8.50 on the website so ...)
Very polished and accurate description of the happening 😛✌🏾
